History - MGJ, founded 1998, is a school of thought, not a style of martial arts. The group's belief in a democratic process allows for the newest student to have a voice in the process of the group. MGJ feels that every person brings valuable life experiences in addition to their martial arts, thereby enriching the experience for all members.
Celebrating the education that reaches beyond books and lessons serves to create a sense of community fostering respect for all walks of life. Members become a family supporting each other and sharing in their success.
The group values the wide range of diversity in its membership. Mukei Goshin Jutsu has members who come from the continental United States, Pacific Islands, Russia, Latvia, Netherlands, Spain, Japan, Thailand, Lebanon, Mexico, China, and the Navajo Nation. At Northern Arizona University in 2000 the group started to grow and formed a University sport organization. During the period from 2000 to late 2004 MGJ had over 300 members and trained over 1000 people in various self defense seminars.
The Nin Sho Ryu martial arts system is the parent style, heavily influencing MGJ philosophies, concepts and techniques as well as granting the authority to issue rank. MGJ is descended from the Black Panther Academy of Self Defense and show respect to the lineage of O-Sensei John Grantham, Hachidan (8th Degree Black Belt) and O-Sensei Chuck Harris, Kyudan (9th Degree Black Belt).
Mukei Goshin Jutsu translated from Japanese by Futoshi Gomamoto, one of the original members, means, "Without form developing mind, body and spirit as one in a way of defense".
MGJ holds Bruce Lee’s philosophy noted in the Dao of Jeet Kun Do, "Absorb what is useful, and discard the rest" close to the heart.
